There is something about college football season that can’t be explained, it has to be felt. It’s the feeling you get when you hear “Glory, glory!” for the first time, when the crowd is jumping to “Inner Sandman”, when the Go Blue banner is raised high, and when the Masked Rider takes to the field as chants of “Raider power!” fill the stadium. You join in with your fellow students, alumni and fans to cheer on your team, and at this point, anything can happen. It’s a goose bump-raising feeling and one that can’t be duplicated.
But what to do when you have decided that this football season it’s worth it to forgo your seat in the stadium and work for The Walt Disney Company on a Disney College Program? Although nothing can replace the feeling of actually being at the game, there are several ways to still feel involved and catch all the action at locations around property.
Watch your game at the ESPN Club on Disney’s Boardwalk.
If you think you’ve been to a sports bar and restaurant before, think again. ESPN Club shows virtually any and all televised games from one of their nearly 100 video monitors in the restaurant. With TVs hanging from the ceiling, mounted on the wall, placed at your table and even in the bathroom stalls, you won’t miss a moment. In addition, the food and drinks served are a sports fan’s dream!
Play football on the giant field at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort.
Get your head in the game, or at least try to with the larger-than-life helmets that sit on the sidelines at this sports-themed resort. If you are missing the feeling of being at the game, this may not completely recreate it for you, but it’ll be close! Grab some friends for a silly game of football on this huge field.
Wear your colors proudly and have a team day at the parks.
Everyone on the College Program represents for a different university, so tell your roommates and friends to wear their university’s colors, jerseys or t-shirts and proudly show them off for a team day at the parks. You might even encounter Guests who are also supporting your team that day! Singing your fight song with other fans in front of Cinderella Castle? Now that’s a magical moment.
Cross your fingers for a good Citrus Bowl matchup this January.
Maybe it’ll even be your team! Even if it isn’t, a bowl game is always a good time and this year the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl is being played on New Year’s Eve! What a way to ring in 2017.
If you extend through January, get excited for the Pro Bowl.
At a press conference in June at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the Pro Bowl will be moving from Hawaii to Orlando, Florida, in 2017! In addition to this exciting move, the event will be reimagined to celebrate all levels of football, from youth to the NFL’s best. The game will be played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Jan. 29, and events will be held in the days before at locations across the Walt Disney World Resort. Look for more details about this event as the date nears!
Whatever your conference and whoever your team, football season is an exciting time, even when you are located far away from the bright lights of your home field. I have been in Florida for three years now, and it’s quite far from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where I spent five years cheering for my Red Raiders. Take my word, though: I have never missed watching a single moment of TTU football since being in the sunshine state thanks to all the resources here and in the Central Florida area. You won’t miss any for your team, either!
Go team and have a great football season!
