What Do We Do During Arrivals?

2012 Fall Advantage Participants
Arrivals are an exciting time for both the Disney Internships and Programs staff, as well as the newly-arriving participants, because for both groups, it is the beginning of a new adventure and an opportunity to create long-lasting memories. Joe  and Kyle are Program alumni, who now serve in a Professional Internship capacity with the Disney Housing Operations team at Walt Disney World. We caught up with both of them, to learn more about their journeys and the role they play during arrivals season.

For the past five months, Joe has supported the team as a Housing Event Intern. His day-to-day responsibilities include creating and implementing all-star events – everything from welcome parties to large-scale offerings, like the Night of Stars Talent Competition. Interestingly enough, Joe’s history with the company began in 2009, where he worked in quick-service food and beverage during his College Program.

When asked what he remembers about his arrivals experience, Joe says that he was filled with curiosity. “I remember standing outside of the Vista Way pavilion and wondering what was in store for my semester. At the time, I couldn’t possibly have imagined how important that first day would be for the rest of my career.”

One thing he surely wasn’t expecting was returning to the Program one day, to work on the opposite end of the arrivals process. Here’s a typical arrival day:

  • At 6 a.m., the day begins, with arrivals set up. Each area, from the check-in space, to the family and friends welcome area, needs to be organized and stocked with any needed materials.
  • Between 7 and 8 a.m. additional volunteers arrive and Joe gathers them to give them a lay of the land. It takes true teamwork to make the arrivals experience a seamless one, and every piece of the puzzle is key.
  • Then, it’s time to welcome the new Disney Internships and Programs participants! Throughout the day, Joe will assist with paperwork, share information about upcoming events and of course, provide a helping hand wherever it’s needed.

“I absolutely love meeting all the new participants and helping them to get settled into their new life as a Disney Internships and Programs Cast Member,” said Joe.

Joining in on the arrivals excitement is Kyle, a Communications Intern for Disney Internships and Programs, whose Disney journey began back in 2007, where she worked in custodial during her College Program. “Looking back, I just remember thinking how the arrivals process was a lot less intimidating than I thought it was going to be,” said Kyle.  (Fun fact: Kyle met her two roommates while she was waiting in line to check in for her program.)

Today, Kyle assists with the arrivals process by facilitating Welcome Sessions in housing and sharing her experience and answering questions from family and friends that join the new Cast Members during the arrivals process. While waiting, friends and family members also have the option to take a tour of a model apartment and get any questions that they may have answered. “I enjoy answering concerns and questions that family members have, because I want to assure them that this program really is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Like Joe, I never knew how much this program would impact the rest of my career.”

When Kyle isn’t supporting arrivals, you can spot her taking photos at Disney Housing events and working on special projects alongside her communications team members.

Although arrivals may seem a little intimidating, just remember that there will be cast members onsite,  who are willing to help and guide you throughout the process.

To those of you who’ll be joining us soon at the Disneyland or Walt Disney World Resort, congratulations on accepting your offers – we can’t wait to meet you!
