March Madness is in the air, and if you’re a sports fan like me, this is one of the best times of the year! As I glanced over the brackets this week, I started thinking about one of the hidden gems of living in Anaheim during the Disneyland College Program: you’re surrounded by some of the best professional sports in the world!
Throughout your program at Disneyland® Resort, we always encourage everyone to venture out and explore the surrounding area. Many of our participants use their free time to take in as many sporting events as they can. After all, you’re just a short drive away from professional baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, football and more.
This truly is a sports fanatic’s paradise. One week you can cheer on LeBron and the Lakers at the Staples Center and the next week, you can check out the defending National League champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Soccer is also extremely popular in California and attending a L.A. Galaxy game should definitely be on your bucket list. Looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon? Gather some friends and head over to L.A. for a Rams game.
Of course, it can be challenging living in a new city or state and finding friends to tag along to these sporting events. That’s where we can help! Every season, we take our participants to an Anaheim Angles game where getting the helmet nachos and cheering on Mike Trout are must-dos! This is an excellent chance to meet other sports fans on the program and have a ton of fun. Plus, here’s the best part, the tickets are on us!
We also take our participants to an Anaheim Ducks hockey game and give everyone an opportunity to quack, quack, quack the team to victory. Most of our participants have never been to a hockey game before but they quickly learn how exciting they can be. Again, we provide the tickets and the Ducks provide the entertainment.
Living near L.A., it’s not all about professional sports. There are also a lot of spectacular collegiate sports, too. Have you ever been to the L.A. Coliseum and watched USC take on Stanford or Notre Dame? If not, this is an absolute must!
Growing up, my sports dream was to catch a game at the Rose Bowl and this stadium is less than an hour away from our apartment complex. I highly recommend making that drive during your program. There’s nothing like watching a UCLA football game in this historic stadium and being surround by mountains and the amazing California weather.
As a cast member at The Walt Disney Company, you can also purchase tickets to select sporting events at a discounted rate (based on availability). Sometimes, they’ll even sponsor bus trips to some of the games!
Maybe you love playing sports but aren’t a fan of sitting through a three hour game watching someone else. That’s okay, too! Disneyland Resort also has quite a few Cast Sports Leagues available, such as volleyball, baseball/softball, basketball, running club and more! We love getting our interns together to form a team.
If you’re interested in getting involved in some of these opportunities or attending some of the local games, make sure to stop by the Programs Office during your internship and let us know. We’d be happy to help you cross off some of these things on your sports bucket list.
