Anyone that knows me knows I love musicals. Anyone that knows me really well knows that I am OBSESSED with Newsies (the musical – not the film where Christian Bale blesses us all by riding horseback). Over the course of my past two years with The Walt Disney Company, this wonderful show has guided my career and my love for what I do, bringing with it some lifelong lessons. Here are just a few things that I learned from the underdog musical:
1) It’s okay to not know what you’re doing
Sometimes, I have no clue how to start on a project or what I’m even supposed to do. It can be overwhelming, and oftentimes, my gut reaction is to shut down and stress. This of course gets me nowhere. The important thing is to just start! Even if it takes a few tries to get it right, it’s always best to get going.
2) Sometimes you just need to dance it out
Things can get stressful – emails can pile up, and before you know it, it’s almost time to call it a day. Trying to cram five hours of work into one hour is never going to work, although I certainly try! Days like this, I have to remind myself to step back, take a deep breath, and let it go for a few minutes; go outside and smell the flowers or go for walk. Or do a switch-leap with my fist in the air.
3) Anyone can be a dreamer
Walt said it best, but the message rings loudly in all of the stories that Disney creates and shares; dream big! Follow your dreams! Easy for Walt Disney Imagineers and artists to say (in my biased opinion), but for a girl with an English degree, my dreams don’t often feel as grandiose or exciting. Well, here I am – writing a blog article and following my dreams. So take that!
4) Things won’t always go as planned
Plans look great on paper, but execution is never as simple. We all have days where we want to stand on a rooftop and sing ballads about our dream vacation getaways (really though, Santa Fe?) when things don’t go our way. Or at least I do! When things don’t go right, get back on the metaphorical horse and try again!
5) Seize the Day
This one says it all: embrace every opportunity given to you with a positive attitude and the confidence that you can do anything you put your mind to!
