5 ways to set yourself up for success on your Disneyland College Program

Are you arriving in the spring? It’s never too early to set yourself up for success!

Many of you have already accepted an offer for our spring program and will be moving to Anaheim, California before you know it. January seems like such a long time away, but it’s never too early to start preparing for your life-changing adventure.

We can’t wait to welcome you to Disneyland® Resort and be a part of the Disney College Program. We’ve already started receiving questions from some of you about what to pack, how to prepare, what to expect, etc. We love the enthusiasm!

Whether you’ve completed multiple programs or will be joining us for the very first time, check out this list of five things you can do over these next few months to start preparing for your internship. All of these things will help set you up for success!

Plan ahead
Let’s be honest; most of you will wait until the last minute to start packing and arranging transportation to Anaheim. That may have worked for you in the past, but waiting too long can present a lot of challenges.

Before your arrival, you’ll receive an email from the Disney College Program that will share all of the details you’ll need for your upcoming arrival. This will also include a packing list. Make sure to read this right away and start preparing! It will give you suggestions on what to bring (or not to bring), transportation suggestions, information about the Disney Look, documents you’ll need and a whole lot more.

Keep in mind, although Southern California is beautiful and sunny most of the time, it does get chilly, too. You’ll want to bring clothes for all different kinds of weather. And don’t forget some business professional attire! You never know when you’ll need it.

Set goals and create a bucket list
Now is the perfect time to make a list of all the things you want to accomplish while you’re on the program. Think of this as your Disney College Program bucket list. What are you looking to get out of your internship? No matter how big (or small) your goals and dreams are, write them down!

Your internship will fly by and you’ll be extremely busy, so it never hurts to have a list to keep your motivation level high. My biggest piece of advice is to come up with both big and small goals. Maybe a small goal of yours is to become friends with someone from another state. A bigger goal could be to attend at least three Disney VoluntEAR activities. Don’t leave your program in August 2019 wishing you had done more.

Make networking a priority
If you want to utilize your internship to help land a full-time job or a Disney Professional Internship, you’re not alone. We hear this from the majority of our participants; but what are you going to do to make it happen? Networking is a great start. You’ll hear that word a lot while you’re here.

Networking isn’t easy though, right? No way! I was always terrified to put myself out there and meet with leaders. I was always afraid they wouldn’t like me or I was wasting their time. Let us help!

Throughout your journey, we’re going to set up a lot of networking opportunities for you to meet with leaders and form professional connections. Take advantage of these! I repeat…take advantage of these! Step out of your comfort zone and do everything you can to make things happen for yourself. We’ll get you started, but it’s up to you to show up and knock it out of the park. You can do it!

Keep an open mind
I know what you’re thinking; “I always have an open mind and I’m just so happy to work for Disney, I’ll do anything you want me to.” Trust me, I get it. I’m the same way, but there will be things along the way that make you think twice about that.

Maybe it’s your role. Let’s face it; not everyone will fall in love with their role, and that’s okay! Here’s where your open mind comes into play. You may not absolutely love your role, but do everything you can to make it your own and have a blast doing it. You may believe that you’re the best fit for Attractions or Front Desk, but you accepted an offer for Custodial and are having second thoughts. If you go into the role thinking you’re going to hate it, you probably will. Give it a chance. You never know, you may end up loving it.

Get involved
If you browse through some of our blogs, you’ll read a lot about our celebrations and events, Career Development Workshops and Disney VoluntEAR activities. My challenge for you is to get involved and do everything you can to attend these exclusive opportunities. Go ahead and add these to your Disney College Program bucket list.

As you prepare for your upcoming arrival, start thinking about what activities you want to take part in. Where else can you tour Walt Disney’s apartment, get resume tips from Disney professionals and volunteer your time at a local beach clean-up or at a school working with kids…all in the same week!

This program is filled with adventures beyond your wildest dreams. Don’t stand around and be a spectator…get involved and have some fun!
